a primer for constructing and analyzing conceptual structures

May 20, 2011

Refined concept mapping, a development over the regular concept mapping is an approach towards introducing rigor and parsimony in representing knowledge. The method proposed suggests substitution of the ambiguous relation names with well-defined relation names to concepts consistently while mapping a domain. We suggest the use of
this method for introducing rigor in concept mapping and position it among other models of knowledge representation in an inverse semantic spectrum. This paper was presented at the 18th ICCS 2010 conference.

Now in continuation, we have proposed to develop a primer (guide, tutorial) that can be used to apply RCM as a methodology for representing knowledge. This has been accepted at the CSLTA 2011 workshop to be held in conjunction with the 19th ICCS 2011 conference.

In this paper, a rationale and proposal for developing a primer for teaching-learning of conceptual structures is presented. The skills required and developed by an engagement of constructing and analyzing conceptual structures are richer and easier to be dealt with in school education. The teaching-learning context of CS is fundamental and important enough to introduce the topics from logic, philosophy, computer science and linguistics. A proposal is made for the formation of a special interest group for the primer. More about the paper.

The framework of the primer comprises of Units (lesson plans) with specific Learning Objectives. We suggest that the primer can serve as a guide to areas such as knowledge representation, conceptual structures, etc.

mtv roadies audition

February 11, 2011

the season 8 of the mtv roadies – shortcut to hell auditions are on air. its a must watch, especially raghu is very sharp in understanding the correct intentions of the candidates. he can at once know whether the candidate is genuinely interested to become a roadie, or in some cases coming for just time pass, or just to get a chance to abuse raghu, etc.

also interesting to note is the personalities of candidates. at this age of around 20 years, people still are not clear with their lives, they don’t even know what they are upto. more often they are one personality within and want to appear as someone very hard, daring and ready for anything, so on.   raghu even does a good job of counseling  them although harshly.

except for the abusive languages that go on, the auditions are a must watch. the tasks would be same as that of any other action based reality show.

process modelling of mitosis

November 20, 2010

as part of my ph.d. work, i am modeling the processes as change in states of object. currently, the topic of mitosis is modelled following the derobertis book. to name a few of such processes these are–condensation, fragmentation, migration, formation, etc. a convention of notations based on conceptual graphs is also developed. i plan to conduct an empirical study using this method with college, and under grad students.

another exciting feature of this modeling is that it can be used to generate lattices following the formal concept analysis approach. let us see.

the process modeling approach has implications for biology education, FCA – conceptual structures, bio-ontology.  shall update as and when i have results.

trek to kondana caves, karjat

September 29, 2010

finally i made my mind to go on  a trek. it was a trip organized by our power house gym group of chembur. we had loads of fun, masti, music, dance.

we started from chembur at about 08:00 am in a private bus. we had breakfast in the bus alongwith the songs, etc. we reached the village at about 10:00 am. in a private house or wada (which caters to providing food, room, etc. for trekkers). With some more breakfast and tea, we began towards the caves. initially there is a small trail of about 10 mins. with the river. then toward the end of the trail, on the left is the way to go the kondane caves. the path is quite easy, with some waterfalls, forest area. the caves also has waterfall to enjoy. rock climbing, rappelling are a few activities that can be planned. the kondane caves is one of the buddhist caves, and dates back to 5th century.

after enjoying the waterfalls, we began our descent towards the village. in the wada we had wholesome lunch of typical maharashtrian food. then was relaxing time, we played some indoor games. it was thundering, and it drizzled. after having our chai, we returned to mumbai in our bus. on the way back, people had overload of dance, music in the bus.

overall, it was exciting. pics of the trek can be viewed from – http://picasaweb.google.com/meena74/KondanaCaves#

enjoy

introducing rigor in concept maps

August 9, 2010

i have been working in the area of refined concept maps for science education. so far we have communicated our research in conferences on science education, concept mapping, etc.

recently, our work got published in Springer’s LNAI  book.  the paper ‘introducing rigor in concept maps’ was presented in the 18th international conference on conceptual structures 2010 at kuching, malaysia. the paper talks about applying rigor by focusing on relation names, the re-representation of sentences to propositions in RDF triples format, and how the refined concept mapping methodology can act as a bridge between informal and formal models of knowledge bases.
